Frequently asked questions and answers
How does the Festool exoskeleton work?
- At the heart of the exoskeleton is an 18 V battery pack that runs a compressor. This means that the exoskeleton is an active support system. A compressed air tank acts as an energy buffer into which excess energy can be fed (for example, if users lower their arms again).
- Once you have put on and activated the exoskeleton, you can use additional power for overhead work via the pneumatic cylinders fitted on the exoskeleton's arms.
- The power assistance is controlled by sensors installed on the exoskeleton's arm joints.
How does an active support system differ from a passive one?
- Active exoskeletons have an external drive, whereas passive systems make use of the energy provided by the user.
- In active systems, the level of support can be adjusted. Meanwhile, in passive exoskeletons, it can only be adapted by changing the hardware.
- Active exoskeletons also enable a differentiation of the power curves. In contrast, the power curves of passive systems remain constant due to hardware design.
What are the advantages of Festool's exoskeleton?
- The exoskeleton provides extra power, offering support during strenuous overhead work on construction sites and taking the load off your shoulders and neck.
- The exoskeleton gives you targeted support precisely where it's needed. You can use the remote control to adjust the active system to the task at hand in a matter of seconds and pause it if required.
- The exoskeleton fits like a glove. It's as easy to put on as a rucksack and has ergonomics that are perfectly tailored to different body sizes. Moreover, it can be individually adapted to different heights.
An exoskeleton is a relatively big investment. Is it worth it?
- Festool offers an active exoskeleton for tradespeople, it is designed for the different requirements and can quickly and flexibly be adapted to them.
- The less disruption an exoskeleton causes users while they are working, the greater their acceptance of it. In contrast, passive systems that support similar regions of the body have fewer customisation options.

Will Festool offer other exoskeletons?
Festool develops new products that are very closely aligned with the requirements of professional tradespeople. If, in the future, we find that we can also use an exoskeleton to support our customers in other tasks – not just overhead work – we will verify the technical feasibility of a suitable solution.
