• Affected products: Festool mitre saws Kapex KS 88 & Kapex KS 120
    Production period 2007 to 02/2010

At Festool we are proud of the quality and durability of our products. The safety of our equipment and therefore of our customers is always our top priority. We would accordingly like to inform you today of a voluntary safety measure. As part of our ongoing product monitoring and quality assessment there have, in isolated cases, been serious indications that the aforesaid mitre saws, which are now more than 10 years old, pose a safety risk. In a small number of cases the saw became hot in places and started to smoulder, bursting into flames in some instances, while the saw was connected to the mains. This means that – even though no such report has reached us as yet – it is possible that a fire could develop in unfavourable circumstances, which could also jump to other objects and spread. Thanks to our careful documentation and findings, we know exactly which products might be affected.

Within the scope of preventive consumer protection and in order to avoid possible damage and injuries up to a risk to life and limb, we urgently ask for your assistance.

Please check further down on this page if your product is affected by entering the part number (T no.) and serial number (S no.).

If your saw is affected, please observe the following safety measures:

FAQ

Questions and answers

What can happen?

If a chain of unfavourable circumstances occurs, it is possible that individual devices will overheat. This can lead some individual saws to smoulder, bursting into flames in some instances. This means that – even though no such report has reached us as yet – under extremely unfavourable circumstances, a fire could develop which could also jump to other objects and spread. Within the scope of preventive consumer protection and in order to avoid possible damage and injuries up to a risk to life and limb, we will be carrying out a retrofitting.

Generally, overheating can only occur if the device is connected to the grid, i.e. it is plugged in. Thus, this affected Kapex can generally continue to be used with precautionary measures. It is important that it only be plugged in as long as this is absolutely necessary for the use of the Kapex. Moreover, the Kapex must be monitored during the period in which is plugged in, as well as shortly thereafter, in order to rule out the possibility that it will burst into flame unnoticed. With correct use, no immediate risk will then exist. Nonetheless, the device has to be retrofitted for safety reasons. This serves the safety of our customers and third parties who could be exposed to the safety risk.

Is this a safety issue?

Yes.

How big is the risk?

The likelihood is very slight - however, we do not take any risks whatsoever where the health of our customers is concerned. The safety of our devices, and thus also the persons around the saws, is of the highest priority for us. In case of any doubt, we would rather issue a warning and voluntarily make these customers an offer to exchange the component involved free of charge and to perform a safety check on the saw.

Can I use my KAPEX without any danger?

Yes. Please unplug it after use and observe the safety measures.

Which saws are affected?

The mitre saws KS 88 and 120 which were produced in 2007-02 2010, and thus are already over ten years old. Due to the long lifetime of our devices, we presume that many mitre saws are still in use. We attach great importance to high quality and the safety of our customers. We will therefore retrofit these devices free of charge immediately.

Have there already been any accidents?
Or any cases of fire?

No. The only damage that we have been notified of concerns individual machines which, it goes without saying, we have replaced in their entirety.
On the grounds of preventative consumer protection and in order to prevent possible damage and injuries and, in severe cases, a danger to life and limb, we are therefore retrofitting all affected machines.
The safety of our machines and thus of our customers is always our first priority.

Is my new KAPEX or a KAPEX with a different designation also affected?

No. Only the mitre saws KS 88 and 120 which were produced in 2007-02 2010, and thus are already over ten years old, can be affected. You can easily identify these devices on our website (www.festool.com/retrofit) by their T and S number.

How does it work? How will my saw get to the workshop and back? What do I have to do? How long will it take? Can I also send the saw to my dealer? Will I incur costs for this?

It goes without saying that we want to make this procedure as simple for you as possible. We are therefore setting up a service team especially for you.
You can expect that we will retrofit your devices from mid-February on.
We will schedule a repair appointment with you so you won’t have to wait too long for your Kapex. We will send you packaging material if needed in which you can prepare your Kapex to be picked up.
We will strive to ensure that your saw is retrofitted and leaves our company again within 48 hours.

Needless to say, we will cover the costs for shipping and retrofitting, including for the required spare parts. We will also perform the safety check free of charge.

What will be retrofitted in specific terms?

Of course we will replace the affected components and repair your saw so that it can be used and stored again without restriction. At the same time, we will take advantage of the opportunity to perform a brief safety check on your saw.

Can I find every affected saw by searching for the T. and S. numbers?

Yes, via this website.

Do I HAVE to send my saw to you even though it is working?
Even if I comply with the safety notice?

Yes. This is absolutely necessary for the protection of life and limb, even if the safety notice is complied with.

In my country, there is no Festool service (anymore). Where should I send my affected Kapex to?

Please contact us on our website with your individual T and S number. We will then get back to you with a solution for the retrofitting.

How long will this recall last?

We are fundamentally responsible for all Festool machines at the end customer.
For this reason, there is no limited time period for free of charge retrofitting.
